Objectives

To raise awareness of the importance of multidisciplinary approach to the heritage study.

To analyze critically international charters and conventions, Portuguese legislation and its applications.

To understand the international influences in the architecture practices, urban planning, safeguarding and promotion of the built heritage.

To develop instrumentation skills of heritage's economic value as a social and cultural development agent.

To acquire research tools on the issues under analysis from the study of literature sources, handwritten sources, observation and inventory.

Learning outcomes and competences

A major goal of this course involves the acquisition of knowledge and construction of critical thought about Heritage and its values in its diachronic and actuality, so as to value the Heritage as a socio-economic and territorial development agent.
The study of the topics is accompanied by information on theories and practices of international and national interventions and heritage conservation actions.
The approach to content requires the critical reading of theory, international doctrine and national legislation and their application in the Portuguese social, economic, cultural and technological context.
Given the multidisciplinary nature of heritage study, this course promotes the crossing of the subject area of History of Art with other scientific areas: History, Urban Planning, Architecture, Construction Techniques and Materials.
