Objectives

To familiarize students at a fairly deep level with the history of the British Isles, considering selected aspects of society and worldview pertaining to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of the course, students should be able to recognise fundamental data pertaining to the cultural, social and political history of the British Isles in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and to have developed their skills in cultural and literary analysis.

Title of the programme: MODERNITY, FREEDOM AND IDENTITY IN BRITISH CULTURE IN THE SEVENTEENTH AND EIGHTEENTH CENTURIES

 

Considering the general topic mentioned above, this course will examine some of the principal aspects of the political, social and intellectual history of the British Isles in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, focusing in particular on the period between the Glorious Revolution of 1688-89 and the early decades of the eighteenth century. The following are among the relevant aspects to be covered:

- the significance of the Glorious Revolution and of the Bill of Rights of 1689 in the context of the establishment or consolidation of a liberal political system;

- the development of a consumer society, and of an imperialistic and sectarian society; the ethics of capitalism and individualism;

- the Enlightenment, Classicism, and the quarrel of the Ancients and the Moderns;

- issues of identity – national, class, gender;

- the role of the arts and the question of taste.

 

The syllabus is organized along the following lines:

  1. The Glorious Revolution of 1688-89 – ideas and context

Documents for analysis: John Locke, Two Treatises of Government and Epistola de Tolerantia (selections); Bill of Rights.

  1. The formation of a public sphere and of a sense of identity(ies) in the Augustan Age; the new sociability and the commodification of culture

Documents for analysis: The Tatler, The Spectator and other eighteenth-century periodicals (selected articles).

  1. Protestantism, individualism and imperialism
