- to problematise issues related to sources in history; - to identify the typology of main historical sources; - to critique historical sources; - to provide students with the necessary tools to work in the Social and Human Sciences;
The Student understands the specicity of historical knowledge. He knows what history sources are, the major types of sources, and how to create a general and a specific questionary for them. He has both a theoretical undestanding of sources in History and the ptayical skills to define them and to work with them.
1. Historians and historiography a. What is a historian? b. Formulating problems; selecting and critiquing the sources; processing data; writing a text. 2. Sources, information, and “facts”: from the traditional notion of “monument” and “document” to a much more encompassing definition of source. 3. How to define a historical source? a. Conditions for production; b. Contexts of production; c. Representativeness. 4. Typology of main historical sources a. Written sources i. Documents ii. Chronicles iii. Literary sources iv. the Press v. Libraries; Archives; Documentation Centers b. Non-written sources i. Objects of material culture ii. Iconography iii. oral sources iv. the environment
Specialized bibliography will be proposed for each individual subject.
Theoretical/practical classes will be taught with the help of visual aids, statistics and cartographic material. Tutorial classes will be devoted to the following activities: critical approach to and discussion of the module contents; student debates moderated by the teacher; oral presentations of reports and students’ research projects; discussion of the main bibliography.
