Objectives
In this course students will achieve the level C1.1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) in all competences. They will deepen their cultural competence and acquire the necessary skills and text competence for their further education and their future professional activity. At the end of the semester they are supposed to be able to:
. communicate in German, adequately and selecting the appropriate style and register, in different professional and academic situations, both orally and in writing;
. distinguish different types of text and reproduce them actively;
. express themselves with greater grammatical accuracy;
. use a different lexicon depending on the communicative situation;
. understand authentic texts and write summaries thereof;
. express themselves more fluently in oral communication;
. consult sources in German and process information;
. write and present academic papers;
. use effectively dictionaries, grammars, corpora and correction programs;
. apply strategies to overcome difficulties independently.
Learning outcomes and competences
By the end of the semester , students should have reached part of the level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages CEFR.

Program
The program includes:
. reading and analysis of scientific and journalistic texts or excerpts and texts from manuals;
. strategies to raise awareness of distinguishing characteristics of different text types: in structure, style, register, phraseology and use of verbal modes and tenses
. free and interactive communication (presentation of papers, discussions, roll plays)
. textual coherence and cohesion (special focus on connectors)
. written production: specific types of text (abstract, business letter, argumentative texts, academic paper)
. topics: actual culture of German-speaking countries, education and training, intercultural communication and translation
. review and deepening of grammatical and idiomatic contents; collocation (corpora), glossaries
. contrastive studies (interference with the native language or other languages)
. strategies for self-study
. work on projects, research and writing and presentation of papers

Teaching methods and learning activities
Practical classes with various teaching strategies in which students are expected to work individually or in a group, to participate in projects, to use materials indicated by the teacher and to do research in the library and on the internet. Great emphasis is given on active participation by students.
The mode of assessment is the evaluation without final exam, which requires an active and continuous participation by the students: they present oral and written papers, write tests and present research results and a project work.

Eligibility for exams
Frequency of 75% of the classes, except in cases prescribed by law.
Calculation formula of final grade
The final score is calculated based on the average of evaluation components.
Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)
Students have to present all written and oral evaluation components.
Classification improvement
Recourse and improvement for the last test in the semester.
