Objectives

By the end of the semester, students will be able to:

- analyse scientific and technical texts of different types and genres, paying special attention to terminology, phraseology, information structure, register and style;
- carefully select and effectively use multiple resources made available to professional translators, including the web (in general), information provided by experts in different fields, databases, CAT tools, electronic corpora, machine translation;
- specialize in different areas, by focusing independently and specifically on areas of their interest;
- meet all the different phases of a professional translation project;
- work in translation teams and network with other language service professionals with a view to achieving better translation solutions;
- be aware of the need to implement a quality assurance plan adapted to each translation project.

Learning outcomes and competences

By the end of the semester, students are expected to be able to translate specialized texts and be prepared to work as professional translators, both individually and in the context of a translation company.

- Translation of general language, technical and scientific texts.
- Translation of special language texts: professional practical and deontological aspects.
- Specificities of technical and scientific texts of different types and genres (academic, scientific, industrial, commercial, promotional) in English and in Portuguese.
- Practical approaches to translation.
- Online, corpora and database searches, team work and networking for translational purposes.
- The different phases of a professional translation project.

Eligibility for exams

Students are expected to attend 75% of classes, unless otherwise agreed (working students and other exceptions laid down in the regulations should contact the teaching staff in the beggning of the semester to set an alternative assessment procedure).

Calculation formula of final grade

- In-class translation work (regular translation tasks conducted duting the semester): 50%

- Translation test (written): 50%.

In order to pass the curricular unit students need to obtain a minimum grande of 10 points in each of the assessment components (test and in-class translation work) and an average of at least 10 points (in a 0-20 point scale).

Classification improvement

Students wishing to improve their final grade or repeat their assessment will have to repeat the translation test.
