Objectives

This unit aims to develop, in students, the ability to:

1. Set methodological pathways and establish rigorous criteria for research;

2. Define, design, and develop their research projects as well as to manage and communicate their results, providing contact with research projects and operation and providing a space for the monitoring and assessment of ongoing work by peers and mentors;

3. Critically address the issues and their understanding and application in wide multidisciplinary contexts.

The unit also aims to ensure the presence of external elements to the course and provide the interaction between them and the students.

Learning outcomes and competences

Students should be able to:

1. Adopt a critical and enquiring attitude in relation to problems posed by professional practices;

2. Describe and apply different theoretical and methodological devices of scientific production;

3. Design and develop original research that contribute to the enrichment of Museology and Cultural Heritage.

1. Theoretical and methodological issues of research in Social Sciences. Role of theory in Social Science. Empirical and theoretical language

2. Research methodology in Social Sciences. Steps of scientific research. Qualitative and quantitative research. Methods of data collection (desk research, observation techniques, surveys). Analysis and interpretation of results (content analysis techniques parametric and non-parametric)

3. The research in museums and Cultural Heritage. Interdisciplinary and research paradigms. Questions of epistemology and research practices: The development and role of research questions. Characterization and
application of different theoretical and methodological devices. The role of the literature review in the organization and research design as well as in the framework of hypotheses

4. The formalization of research. Internships and Internships Reports. Projects in an organizational context and Project Reports. Research Projects and Dissertations

Teaching methods and learning activities

The theoretical-practical sessions rely on texts and audio-visual materials, resorting to different speakers to present case-studies and so enriching subsequent discussions. Moreover and taking into account the characteristics of this Seminar, the teaching methodology will consist of tutored research work with theoretical and methodological framework as well as the presentation/discussion of research by students.

The following evaluation elements are considered and weighted:

- Quality of participation in sessions (30%);

- Written presentation of the literature review and research project to substantiate the work undertaken in the framework of the Internship/Project/Dissertation (70%).
