To provide the students with basic knowledge in the fields of the History of the British Isles and of the History of English Literature. To familiarize the students with basic concepts of the study of Culture and Literature.
Students are expected to be able to recognize fundamental data in the fields of the History of the British Isles and of the History of English Literature. They are also expected to have acquired fundamental skills for cultural and literary analysis.
Theoretical classes will be devoted to the construction of a historical overview of English (or British) society from the Tudor Age to the Victorian Age, regarding the social and political situation as well as the field of intellectual production. Practical classes and tutorials will focus on five works originating from distinct historical contexts, representative of several genres and aesthetic/ideological orientations, and also of significant value as documents of social history and the history of ideas.
The five works are:
1. Thomas More, Utopia
2. William Shakespeare, Macbeth
3. Alexander Pope, The Rape of the Lock
4. William Blake, Songs of Innocence and of Experience
5. Charles Dickens, Hard Times
N.B.:
1. Students are expected to purchase the following books:
- Dickens, Charles, Hard Times, ed. Kate Flint, London, Penguin, 2003;
- Shakespeare, William, Macbeth, ed. George Hunter, London, Penguin, 2005 [1967];
- an edition of Thomas More's Utopia, to be specified in the first class of the course.
2. Other primary texts will be made available through the usual channels at FLUP.
3. Further bibliographical references will be given in class.
