The objective of the subject is to problematise the theoretical concepts of text groups of differing types of generality. Students are to be shown to what extent the attempts at the definition of medieval genres of necessity simplify that which, on closer analysis, is seen to be a complex and dynamic interplay of developments which condition each other.
Capacity to have reached the objectives of the module
The contents of the subject include: 1) a description of the different historical and theoretical representations of medieval genres as institutionalised groups of texts; 2) a critical discussion of the various criteria for the classification of medieval genres; 3) a problematisation of the concepts 'Gebrauchsliteratur’ and ‚Lyrik’, ‚Epik’ and ‚Drama’ in regard to medieval texts and a discussion of the different sub-groups (‚Minnekanzone’, ‚Frauenlied’, ‚Heldenepik’, höfischer Roman’, etc.) as well as an analysis of the mixed forms (e.g. Tagelied) and the distinction / connection of / between the single genres.
