This course is essentially practical and aimed at developing students' skills in editing, revising and proofreading different types of texts related to different domains of general and specific knowledge.
The expected outcomes of the course are for successful students to be able to:
• analyze and classify a wide variety of written texts according to genre, domain and style;
• Produce texts in Portuguese in varies to scientific, technical, journalistic and commercial styles;
• Adapt texts or translations to another audience, genre or style;
• Understand and implement the instructions given in style guides, guidelines, and other manuals supplied by clients;
• Recognize the possibilities and limitations of revision parameters in the context of the professional situation;
• Evaluate the comprehensibility of a text
• Evaluate their own work and that of others
This programme will cover the following:1) Linguistic Theory • Simple and complex sentence structure • Given and New Information • Theme and Rheme • Organization of information 2) Introduction to and analysis of • Existing manuals on writing techniques; • Style guides on academic writing, newspaper articles, software documentation, and other types of technical writing; 3)Practical work in the production of texts in different styles and genres and evaluation of their comprehensibility
