Objectives
We seek that the student becomes familiar with the main aspects of Military Archaeology (army structure, recruitment system, medieval armament, castles, etc.), of the territorial organization ("Civitates", "Terras", "Julgados", etc), as well as of Road Archaeology (roads, bridges, etc.).
Learning outcomes and competences
The student shall be able to understand the diversity of structures and materials, their diachronic evolution, as well as to know the main bibliography.

1. War in the Middle Age. Army’s structure throughout the Middle Age. From the High Middle Ages army, classically inherited, to the medieval army. Who fought, how they fought. Recruitment systems. Military service (“fossados”) and family names. Other military services. War professionals: nobility and military orders. Other groups: milites villani, crossbowmen and infantry.
2. Medieval armament. Defensive and offensive armaments. Aspects of its evolution. Great moments of innovation. Siege weapons. Reflections on poliorcetics and in military architecture.
3. Medieval castellology. Origins of the castle. Reconquest and encastellation rhythms. Castles and territory organization. Castle and city walls architectural evolution (9th to 15th centuries). Romanic and gothic castles: from passive to active defence. The decay of the castle.
4. Roads and medieval bridges. Characteristics of the medieval road system. Technical aspects of medieval roads and bridges. Structures built around medieval roads: inns, fairs, hospitals and leproseries.
