The students should acquire competencies to create access points by author/producer of information, by title and by subject, using, in this case, indexing languages (thesauri and classifications); they should also understand and apply authority control techniques for the establishment of access points.
At the end of this curricular unit, the students must:
- know how to use controlled language to the establishment of access points by author/producer of information, using the adequate standardization, as well as to establish acce points by titles;
- know how to use controlled indexing languages (thesauri and classifications) to represent and to retrieve information by subject.

I The access by information producers and titles: cataloguing

II The access by subject: subject indexing
1. The process of subject indexing
1.1. Recognition / Identification of concepts: the Portuguese Standard NP-3715; Informational content analysis - methods - Identification and selection of concepts
1.2. Representation of concepts - access term - notion of coordination - indexing languages
2. Use of indexing languages: categorial languages and combinatory or vocabular languages
The theoretical classes will have the support of presentations and of several standards used in this curricular unit.
In the practical classes will be done application exercises (cataloguing and subject indexing).
The tutorial sessions will be devoted to the clearing up of doubts and the supervision of works.

The presence in the classes (75% obligatory) is considered an indispensable condition to the approval in the curricular unit.
The evaluation consists on an individual or group (2 students) assessment (A) and a final examination (FE). Each one of these evaluation components counts 50% for the final classification. The student must have at least 9,5 in each one of the evaluation components.
The final classification (FC) is calculeted as follows:
FC = (A + FE) / 2

The improvement of the classification can be obtained through the reformulation of the work and/or the repetition of the final examination.
