Objectives

- To analyse the main lines in Portugal's history of the twentieth century;
- To develop analytical and critical capacities about the historical production;
- To Discuss interpretations and ways of approaching history.

Program

1. The crisis in the late nineteenth century constitutional monarchy
1.1-structures and conjunctures.
1.1-political crisis of the monarchy and the growing assertion of republicanism.
1.3-cultural trends.

2. The Republic
2.1 - Republican proposals for the democratic regeneration.
2.2 - the 1st Great War and the economic and social difficulties
2.3 - authoritarian ways and the failure of liberal Republican alternative
2.3 - the cultural scene.

3. Dictatorship and the "New State"
3.1 - the anti-liberal politics and military dictatorship.
3.2 - the institutionalization of the Estado Novo and resistances.
3.3 - the economic crisis and the "New State" policy.
3.4 - the colonial policy.
3.5 - the opposition to the "fascist regime"
3.6 - the post-war, economic plans and opening up to Europe.
3.7 - colonial wars and the decay of the regime
3.8 - society and culture under the "New State".

4. The institutionalization of democracy and openness to the world
4.1 - revolution, democratization,decolonization
4.1- the "hot summer of 75"and the constitutional challenge
4.2 -social struggles, unions, land reform and nationalizations
4.3 - the challenges of European integration and the economic adjustments
4.4 - social and cultural transformations.
