Objectives
To outline the origin and evolution of the main social groups in medieval Portugal (the clergy, aristocracy and the people) as well as of main activities (agriculture, trade and industry) between the 10th and 15th centuries. Special emphasis will be placed on the social and economic dimension in the establishment of the kingdom of Portugal.
Program
Introduction: the diversity of the land and communities.
1. Social structures (12th – 15th centuries).
1.1. Demographics.
1.2. The economic foundations of social classes: war and land ownership.
1.3. Social classes: clergy, nobility, commoners, ethnic and religious minorities, foreigners.
2. Economic Structures (12th – 15th centuries).
2.1. Rural areas and the weaknesses of the urban structure.
2.2. Land and sea production.
2.3. Craft production.
2.4. Trade (domestic and foreign markets).
2.5. Currency and prices.

Eligibility for exams
According to the assessment regulations in force: 75% compulsory class attendance, unless otherwise stipulated. Attendance will be checked by means of a class register.
Calculation formula of final grade
Final written examination (50%), critical review (40%) and participation/performance in the tutorial sessions (10%).
