Objectives

General objectives:
To reflect upon the missions and objectives of museums in the contemporary world;
To critically analyse different theoretical concepts that contextualize current evaluation and research practices in museums and to understand its implications for the development of any communication programme in museums;
To understand and apply different evaluation and research methodologies in museums;
To reflect upon the implications of such studies in contemporary museum practice.

1. Introduction: the development of the concept of museum. Functions, objectives and contemporary missions. The museum as a space of communication and inclusion.
2. The development of an evaluation culture in the museum sector.
3. Communication models in museums
4. The visitors: motivations and interpretative strategies in museums
5. Education and learning within the heritage and museological contexts.
6. Conclusion: contemporary values and professional strategies.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical-practical classes; lectures and discussion of issues using texts, audiovisual aids and other material; field trips and presentation and discussion of analyses; exposition and discussion of case-studies. Class debates will be heavily promoted as an essential guarantee of participated, reflective and critical learning.
