Objectives
To provide the students with basic knowledge in the fields of the History of the British Isles and of the History of English Literature.
To familiarize the students with basic concepts of the study of Culture and Literature.
Program
Theoretical classes will be devoted to the construction of a historical overview of English (or British) society from the Tudor Age to the Victorian Age, regarding the social and political situation as well as the field of intellectual production.
Practical classes and tutorials will focus on five works originating from distinct historical contexts, representative of several genres and aesthetic/ideological orientations, and also of significant value as documents of social history and the history of ideas. The five works are:
1. Thomas More, Utopia
2. William Shakespeare, Macbeth
3. Alexander Pope, The Rape of the Lock
4. William Blake, Songs of Innocence and of Experience
5. Charles Dickens, Hard Times
