Objectives
1. The student will learn the main dates, currents and facts of Christian’s history and their fight against paganism; he will know the most important authors and texts from Patristic to St. Augustine.
2. The students will make the synthesis the three pillars of the European Union: the classic heritage, Christians and the culture of the Germans. They will learn about monarchism, from its creation until Rule of Saint Benedict.
3.They will be able to identify the main mental attitudes of the barbarians, know the relationship between the ecclesiastic culture and popular culture. They will acquire the main knowledge about education in the Early Middle Ages and the Carolingian Renaissance (themes, stages, main characters, etc.).
4. The student will learn about the problem of the "Terror in the year one thousand" in historiography, “Renaissance in the XII century” (religion, art and people, Abelardo´s theology).
5.The teacher will give lectures about the medieval universities (dates, facts, typology, chairs, purposes and operation).

1. Late Antiquity’s heritage. Christians and pagans: from comfort to the crisis
1.1. Main facts and dates of the rising Christians
1.2. Christian’s difficulties through time and societies. Aspects of awkwardness, repulse and attraction.
1.3. Greek Patristic: Clement and Origen. Catechism in Alexandria and Antioch.
1.4. Latin Patristic: When Christians begin to speak Latin. Tertullian, Minúcio Félix, Saint Ambrose.
1.5. Saint Augustine.
2. Early Middle Ages (V-X centuries).
2.1. The synthesis the three pillars of European culture: Classical heritage, Christians and German culture.
2.2.Monarchism.
2.3.Barbarian minds.
2.4. Relationships between the ecclesiastic culture and popular culture: Cesário of Arles and Martinho of Dume.
2.5. From the “last Romans” to the new European kingdoms with scholars.
2.6. Education in the early middle ages.
2.7. Carolingian Renaissance.
2.8. The linguistic fragmentation in the East: the rise of literature in vernacular languages.
2.9. Reform in the church of the Carolingian era; unification of the liturgy; from Benedict of Aniane to Cluny.
3. High Middle Ages (XI-XIII centuries)

Teaching methods and learning activities
Lectures will be devoted to presentations with the aid of graphic, statistical and cartographic materials.
Tutorials will comprise critical analysis of the topics covered in class and debates on theoretical issues.

Eligibility for exams
Students are admitted to exams provided that the conditions established in the Assessment Regulations are met: mandatory 75% attendance of planned classes, unless established otherwise by law. Attendance will be monitored by means of attendance records.
Calculation formula of final grade
Final exam: 100%
Examinations or Special Assignments
In accordance with the Assessment Regulations, students who are exempt by law from attending classes may also request an added assessment, to show that they master the skills.
Classification improvement
The process for improving grades must comply with the types of assessment planned for the course unit. Students may redo or repeat the test or tests in which they have failed to achieve a satisfactory grade.
