Objectives
- To present a general overview of the major directions, strategies and structural transformations characterising European colonisation processes (both in the colonised and colonising areas), based on their diachronic evolution and considered from a contextual and comparative perspective.
- To analyse Portuguese colonisation within the larger economic, political and cultural context of Modern Europe, with a view to identifying possible explanations for this historical phenomenon.
- To develop a critical approach to the issues of cultural conflict, (in) communicability between different civilizations, and perception of difference in Modern Europe.
- To present a historical analysis of intersecting social, economic and cultural universes, based on a dialectical approach.

- To conduct guided debates to develop analytical and critical skills as well as students' ability to present their arguments in a scientific manner;
- To develop cognitive skills and provide the conceptual and operational tools essential in active and critical learning

Teaching methods and learning activities
TP classes: Theory-practical teaching, using graphs, statistics and maps.
Tutorials: Critical approach and discussion of course contents, namely the theory issues raised by contents; fostering discussions among students, moderated by the lecturer; oral presentation of reports and the result of assignments done in the course of student’s autonomous work; discussion of concepts and bibliography considered as relevant.

Eligibility for exams
Students are admitted to exams provided that the conditions established in the Assessment Regulations are met: 75% class attendance, unless established otherwise by the regulations in force. Attendance will be monitored by means of attendance records.
Calculation formula of final grade
Exam - 70%
Literature review - 30%
Examinations or Special Assignments
Applicable only to the cases established by law.
Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)
All students, without exception, must meet the same type of assessment requirements.
Classification improvement
The process for improving grades must comply with the types of assessment planned for the course unit. Students may redo or repeat the test or tests in which they have failed to achieve a satisfactory grade.
Observations
Classes taught in English. Tutorials for Erasmus students may, if necessary, be taught in English or French.
