Objectives
Successful students will acquire knowledge on:
- Portuguese climate, hydrology, geology and geomorphology;
- the structural regions of Portugal: geomorphology and landscapes.
Program
1. General characterization of the country: the need to integrate Portugal into the Iberian Peninsula
2. Integration of Portugal into the European and Peninsular geological framework
3. Structural regions of Portugal: characteristic relief features
4. Ante-Mesozoic evolution of the Portuguese territory: Geology and Hesperic Massif landscapes
5. The Epi-hercynian covering – Mesozoic evolution. Geology and Meso-Cainozoic bordelands landscapes
6. The Epi-hercynian covering - geomorphologic evolution at the end of the Mesozoic and during the Cenozoic. The Meseta surface and the Alpine orogeny
7. Some aspects of geomorphologic evolution during the Quaternary: climate and sea level changes.
8. Atmospheric circulation and Iberian Peninsula climate. Some general ideas on portuguese climate
9. General characteristics of portuguese rivers. Some hydrological problems concerning Portuguese rivers

Teaching methods and learning activities
E-learning.
Students are expected to prepare the subjects conveyed in class in advance in order to participate more actively in theoretical and practical classes. There will be a mini-test using Moodle at the end of each subject. This test is designed for self-assessment and for students exempted from classes.
A field trip will take place in October 2010.

Route: FLUP-Formiga route-Espiúnca- Canelas geological museum - Arouca (Lunch)- Freita mountain: Mizarela-Castanheira-Porto (FLUP)

Eligibility for exams
Genneraly 75% of class attendance. Students that are not obliged to this attendance must have at least 9,5 in average at moodle mini-tests
Calculation formula of final grade
14 (in 20) for development questions. 6 (in20) for a moodle test that will took place at FLUP, during examination time
Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)
They must be successful in Moodle mini-tests, made up during the academic semester
