Doctorate in Portuguese Culture (1992). Since 2005 Full Professor at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto. Chair of the Institute for the Iberian Studies and Editor of the Journal Península: Revista de Estudos Ibéricos (2002-2008). Dean of the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Porto (2005-2006), Vice-Rector of the University of Porto (2006-2014 and 2018-2021).  Chair of the Governing Board of Fundação Arquitecto José Marques da Silva (since 2008 until 2014) and member of the Pontificio Comitato di Scienze Storiche (2013-2023).
