Integrated Master and Phd in Romance Literatures

Official length of programme

  • Specialisation course – 2 academic semesters;
  • Masters – 2 academic semesters and 2 semesters to prepare the thesis;
  • Ph.D. – 2 academic semesters and 8 semesters to prepare the thesis.

    Admission requirements
    1. First degree in Romance Philology, Classical Philology, Modern Languages and Literature (Portuguese Studies, Portuguese and Spanish Studies, Portuguese and French Studies, Portuguese and English Studies, Portuguese and German Studies, French and English Studies and French and German Studies), or Classical Languages and Literature, with Portuguese and Latin Studies, with the minimum final average grade of 14 (grading scale of 0-20).
    2. Applicants may also hold a degree with a final average grade lower than 14, as long as relevant experience and/or a professional or equivalent qualification is judged to be sufficient to undertake the programme.
    3. First degree in other areas or a legally equivalent foreign degree, as long as relevant experience and/or a professional or equivalent qualification is judged to be sufficient to undertake the programme.

    Course Description
    Aims
    This course is aimed at broadening knowledge on Portuguese, French and Brazilian Literature. The course offers six possible areas of study from which students can choose according to their own particular interests: The Middle Ages in Romance Literatures; Romance Literatures in the 16th-18th centuries; Romance Literatures in the 19th and 20th centuries; Portuguese Literature; Portuguese and Brazilian Literature; French Literature.

    Structure
    Students who wish to obtain the specialization certificate, only attend the course’s curricular component (one year). Those wishing to proceed with the Masters (two years) or Ph.D. (five years), may register for supervision of their theses, upon deliberation of the Course’s Coordinating Committee.

    Career Prospects
    Graduates from this Course are qualified to exercise professional activities in the following fields:

  • Teaching of the language and literature of specialisation in primary and secondary education;
  • Teaching in higher education;
  • Publishing;
  • Academic research in Romance Literatures.
