Bachelor in Portuguese Studies

- All the administrative information:
http://web.letras.up.pt/sga -

Inheriting a curricular tradition which started with the Portuguese Studies variant and prolonged with the Portuguese, Language, Literature and Culture variant - both belonging to the Languages and Modern Literatures Degree -, the 1st cycle in Portuguese and Lusophone studies’ main goal is to satisfy an important deep education demand in mother language’s capacities and area of knowledge. Its foundation is not only the acquisition of theoretical and operative instruments for its structural functioning, but essentially the understanding and the absorption of its main achievements in written literature and culture, which also are, beyond their reference use, the most crystalline sediment in our collective memory.

The degree’s curriculum allows the student to choose the path associated to the study of language, literature and written culture, which allows us to follow in the future a 2nd cycle education, where we highlight:
  • Masters in Literary, Cultural and Interart Studies;
  • Masters in Linguistics;Teaching Portuguese in the 3rd cycle of Basic Education and in Secondary Education and Latin in Secondary Education;
  • Masters in Portuguese as a Second Language/ Foreign Language;
  • Teaching Portuguese in the 3rd cycle of Basic Education and in Secondary Education.

See the study cycle official documents.

The Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES), accredited this study cycle without conditions.

Employment Prospects

A solid curricular education in the Lusophone culture, obtained in the 1st cycle in Portuguese and Lusophone studies provides the student basic competences which will allow him/her to invest in any domain where the deep knowledge of the mother language and of its cultural and civilizational heritage are a requirement, namely the accomplishment of qualified intellectual or human management functions in the administrative or business areas.
