Public Space: Themes and Problems

DFIL026 - ECTS

- To deepen scientific knowledge that fosters critical reasoning about the phenomena of public space in contemporaneity, such as, for example, the relationships between space, power, politics, and the citizen.
- To develop solid scientific training, enabling students to identify and analyse, in the framework of Social and Political Philosophy, some challenges of the contemporary world.

Aesthetics, Politics and Arts

DFIL015 - ECTS

To map the complex scenario of the meaning of contemporary aesthetics, politics and art, from the point of view of a visual and conceptual imagination.
To think about the gesture of creation as an ethical, political and aesthetical event. 
To create the conditions for a profound questioning about the themes in this subject. Such critical work must be oriented by the guidelines of each student’s project, and will include the issues to explore in his/her PhD dissertation.

Philosophy and Science: from the Middle Ages to the Early Modern Period

DFIL025 - ECTS This course provides advanced training on topics of philosophy of man and epistemology from Aristotle to the early modern age, with two main objectives: to provide in-depth knowledge regarding the philosophical issues dealt with in the syllabus and to show the genealogical lines and influences of the debates developed on the scholastic environment on later philosophical systems (Descartes e Kant).

Philosophy and Literature

DFIL024 - ECTS

Understand the specificity of philosophical discourse in dialogue with various literary genres: from poetry to romance and essay. To debate, from texts of the old culture (s) and / or / to the contemporaries, recognizing and comparing the said literary genres.

Problems in the Philosophy of Science

DFIL032 - ECTS The objective of this Curricular Unit is to provide actualized and advanced training in the field of philosophy of science, focusing on two main areas: (1) Analysis of Scientific Knowledge — this part will analyze the main approaches to the analysis of scientific knowledge, such as Karl Popper's “falsificationism”, Thomas Kuhn's notions of “paradigm” and “paradigm shift”, as well as Imre Lakatos' and Paul Feyerabend's conceptions of science. The reference authors in this part are Popper, Kuhn, Lakatos and Feyerabend. (2) Science and the Social Dimension of Knowledge — this part will address problems related to group knowledge, testimony and disagreement, and their relationship to scientific knowledge. The reference authors in this part are: Alexander Bird, John Greco and Jennifer Lackey.
