Objectives

The students should aquire an integrated vision of the History of Pharmaceutical Sciences, developping competences that help him to understand the knowledges learned during the obtention of the master degree  according to the evolution of mankind, specially in what concerns the causes and the treatemnt of diseases.

Learning outcomes and competences

Results of apprenticeship and competences:

-capacity to integrate the subjects concerning medicinal sciences in the historic evolution of mankind;
-to establish connections between the different concepts of medicinal product and the social/environmental conditions;
-to understand the importance of the evolution of mankind in some basic concepts as health, illness and hygiene.

Transversal competences:

-cognitive: critic and analytical capacty; development of creative thoughts,
methodologic: planning capacity;
social: communication habilities and team work.

Program

1-The great landmarks of History and their effect on the development of the social structure: sedentarism, agriculture, empiricism, scientific knowledge, industrial revolution and evolution of communication (written and by pictures).
2-The great periods of the history of pharmacy. The physician and the pharmacist., the knowledge of the human body, and raw materials (minerals, plants and animals). Scientific knowledge and the evolution of technology.

3-The first civilizations. Writing: Sumer, Mesopotamia, Egypt. China and India. Grecia (Hippocrates and the
theory of 4 humours ). Rome (Galene). S. Cosme and St. Damien.

4-Middle Age. Upper Middle Age: the religious orders and the transmission of knowledge concerning pharmacy. Lower Middle Age: progress in the art of healing. Arabic Pharmacy: the new ingredients and the creation of the first public pharmacy.
The great plagues of the Middle Age.

5- From Renaissance to the French Revolution: discoveries. the birth of the scientific knowledge, the mix  between magic and the experimental support. The Social changes.

6- The 19th and 20th centuries: science, the development of Chemistry and the development of Biology. The Industrial Revolution. The great migrations. The technological evolution in the areas of manufacturing and analytical capacity.

7-Manipulated medicines and industrial manufacture. Causes and consequences. The community pharmacist and the industrial pharmacist. Evolution of professional activity.


8-Pharmaceutical deontology: definition, concepts and objectives Deontology and pharmaceutical activity. Pharmaceutical activity as a profession. 
The professional organizations.
Professional secrecy and the code of ethics of the"Ordem dos Farmacêuticos" (college of pharmacists).  Legal norms on the pharmacist and pharmaceutical activities.
  

9-The community pharmacy. Legislative aspects of marketing of medicinal products for human use (generic, narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances), medicinal products for and veterinary use.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Lectures (2h/week; 12 weeks): Power Point presentations.  The teacher in charge is available for attendance of studentsby appointment.

Eligibility for exams

The student’s assistance to lectures is not obligatory.

Attendance is valid for the current academic year and for the following 2 academic years.

Calculation formula of final grade

The final grade is weighted as follows: 60% of written exam + 40% of the theoretical-practical work.    Students with final scores equal to or greater than 9.5 values are considered approved.  Students with final scores less than 9.5 values are considered disapproved.

Examinations or Special Assignments

Students who for special reasons contemplated in the regulations are not evaluated in the distributed component will be assessed by exam, without prejudice to compliance with applicable special legislation.

Classification improvement

At the time of appeal, it is only possible to improve the classification of the theoretical component, requiring registration in academic services for this purpose.
The improvement in the group work component (theoretical-practical) can only occur by the new frequency of the Course Unit. Improvement in the final exam of this component of the distributed evaluation is not allowed.

Teaching Language: Portuguese, but some documents/texts may be in English.
