Community and hospital pharmacists will deal more deeply with prevalent diseases in the community. Based on these pathologies, the trends and strategies for the discovery of new therapeutic targets and new drugs will be discussed. Starting from the disease and the therapeutic target, the mechanism of action at the molecular level and chemical-pharmaceutical pipeline from the leader to the drug and the drugs currently used in therapy and those that are under development will be presented. It is intended that the students will be able to interpret the structure-activity relationships, the metabolism, and the mechanisms of action at the molecular level for the different drug groups. In this course, some therapeutic families that were not deeply discussed in previous classes of Pharmaceutical Chemistry will be also developed. In practical classes, using scientific articles and other bibliographic resources, students will deepen the themes related to the subjects taught in the lectures. It is intended that the student acquires the domain in the preparation of a monograph and its presentation as well as the oral discussion on the proposed topic. In order to stimulate the ability of oral and written expression, critical analysis and argument, the students will prepare throughout the semester, a monograph that will be presented and evaluated.
At the end of this course, students should have a broad and integrated understanding of the entire drug discovery circuit, its planning and development. The development of critical thinking, bibliographic search and autonomy is also fostered. At the end of the UC, students should be able to easily communicate their ideas, collaborate and work as a team and be able to solve problems using the scientific and investigational method.
Structures, therapeutical target, mechanisms of action at molecular level, structure-activity relationships, metabolism, and chemical-pharmaceutical developments of the following families of drugs:
1. Cardiovascular Agents
1.1. Antihypertensive agents: diuretics, depressors of adrenergic activity, vasodilators
2. Hormones and drugs used in endocrine diseases
2.1. Insulin and oral antidiabetics
2.2. Thyroid hormones and antithyroid drugs
3. 3. Chemotherapy
3.1. Antivirals for HIV, HVB, HVC and SARS-CoV-2
3.2. Antiparasitic
3.3. Other anticancer agents: cancer hormone therapy, drug-antibody conjugates, cancer phototherapy
4. Gastrointestinal
4.1. Anti-ulcer: anticholinergics, H-2 antagonist, proton pump inhibitors, prostaglandins, protectors of gastric mucosa, gastrin antagonists
5. Drugs used in:
5.1. Eating disorders: obesity, bulimia, anorexia
5.2. Sexual dysfunction
5.3. Disorders of hair growth: Alopecia
5.4. Smoking cessation
- Theoretical classes (2 hours/week): Presentations in “Power Point”; it is intended to transmit knowledge in an attractive and deductive manner. - A monograph will be elaborated and presented by the students in practical classes. The aim of this bibliographic research work is to get deeper in the issues related to the subjects taught in the theoretical classes, as well as to stimulate the capacity of oral and written expression, critical analysis and argumentation. - The lecturers responsible are available for students consultation on the times announced at the beginning of the semester or at a time previously arranged and agreed.

Assistance to theoretical classes is not mandatory.
Preparation and presentation of a monograph is mandatory for all students, including those who are exempted by law from attending classes.
Two mandatory written tests on the subjects taught in the theoretical classes, will be performed during theoretical classes. For the other components of the assessment to be considered, the Student must obtain a minimum score of 8.6 values in the weighted average of the two mandatory written tests. Whoever does not reach 8.6 values in this average must take the final exam at the time of appeal.
Both written tests are mandatory, including for student workers.
To obtain approval, Students must obtain a minimum final classification of 9.5 values (sum of all evaluation components). Students with a final classification lower than 9.5 values must take a final exam, containing all the material related to the theoretical program, at the time of appeal.
- The final grade is attributed by the following manner: 35% from the elaboration and presentation of a monograph, 65% from the written theoretical tests.
- For the other components of the assessment to be considered, the Student must obtain a minimum score of 8.6 values in the weighted average of the two mandatory written tests. Whoever does not reach 8.6 values in this average must take the final exam at the time of appeal.
- Students with final grades equal or superior to 9.5 will be approved and with final grades inferior to 9.5 will be reproved.
- During practical classes the students will be evaluated by the elaboration and presentation of a monograph. The performance of this is compulsory. Two written tests related to the subject taught in theoretical classes will also be performed. The performance of these is compulsory.
-For classification improvement the student only has to perform the written exam related to the syllabus of theoretical classes. The classification obtained for the monograph is maintained.
Speakers of other languages are accepted as long as they understand Portuguese. It may be provided the exam in English to foreign students, if they wish. All classes will be taught in Portuguese.
Due to confinement, the following changes can be made:
There should be no changes to the theoretical or theoretical-practical program.
Teaching Methods and Learning Activities:
In scenario B, classes take place in a mix of face-to-face session / synchronous video conference. In scenario C, the theoretical classes will be via synchronous videoconference.
In Scenario B, the preparation of monographs during theoretical-practical classes will be divided into 2 shifts. One of the shifts will have face-to-face classes and the other will have distance classes, via synchronous videoconference.
In Scenario C, the preparation of monographs during theoretical-practical classes will be guided by the professors via synchronous videoconference.
Evaluation process and calculation formula for the final classification:
The calculation formula will be maintained.
