Resumo (PT):
level of detail, providing the user the sensation of presence in a synthesised environment.
It is essential in the development of a virtual reality system that the user feels himself
completely imerse in the simulated environment, namely in terms of auditory stimulus.
The 3D Sound synthesis system, described in this paper, was developed in order to improve
the feeling of imersion. Integrating this system with a driving simulator creates a realistic
auditory space surrounding the driver in witch simulation objects are identifiable and located
by the sound they produce. Acoustic effects such as Doppler effect, distance attenuation,
atmospheric scattering and propagation delay are also modelled.
The 3D Sound synthesis application was developed on a personal computer equipped with
low cost sound cards. Integration with driving simulators is easily accomplished through a
local area network as described in this paper.
