Abstract (EN):
Fly ashes are a product of coal combustion in thermoelectric power plants that have vast technological applications but, essentially, are characterized through geochemical and petrographic techniques. Among these, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is the most widely used technique after the X-ray diffraction. However, very rarely, petrographic preparation methods in combination with secondary and backscattered electrons detection modes and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) are used. Therefore, it is presented a brief historical review of terms and concepts related to the fly ash and it is concluded with the description that we believe to be the most suitable method to characterize fly ash by SEM / EDS. © 2014, LNEG ¿ Laboratório Nacional de Geologia e Energia IP.
