Objetivos e Atividades
This project combines the large experience of the Algerian partner in seismic hazard and in collecting and processing earthquake ground shaking and structural damage, with the expertise of the Portuguese partner in numerically simulating the seismic behavior of the existing building stock and estimation of losses. Hence, this multidisciplinary project aims to fill the existing lack of an innovative and comprehensive methodology for seismic risk assessment in urban areas, overcoming the limitations of past efforts regarding to the use of region-specific models derived for the US, and benefitting from the complementary knowledge and competences of the CRAAG and FEUP institutions.
Resultados Esperados/Atingidos
In terms of outcomes, these can be organized by meeting the following four major goals strongly interconnected:
- The development of a nonexistent hazard model that adequately considers the complexity and heterogeneity of the active seismogenic environment of the North of Algeria, along with the derivation of hazard-specific attenuation laws for the tectonic region of Portugal, and improving the Portuguese hazard model. The proposed ground motion models will take into consideration the site conditions and the spatial correlation within and between intensity measures types.
- The definition of an accurate exposure model for the two case studies, considering residential and industrial buildings (Arzew petrochemical zone) and the gas network, which is extended from Algeria to Portugal. Detailed information will be collected, from census datasets, satellite images to field surveys, using the most up to date inventory capture tools presented in the Global Earthquake Model |
