Created in 2015, the Sustainability Committee at FEUP has been active in several areas, focusing on raising the academic community's awareness of issues related to sustainable development. In this context, examples of some initiatives are given below:

• the promotion of the contest "More Sustainable Ideas", which aims at recognising innovation regarding Sustainability in the institution;
• joint initiatives with FEUP students union/groups, particularly within the scope of the commemoration of the World Days of Engineering for Sustainable Development and the Environment;
• the offer of a reusable bottle to the 1st-year undergraduate students;
• the adaptation of vending machines with the 'no glass' option, in partnership with AEFEUP, to promote the use of reusable cups;
• the organisation, in collaboration with Lipor, of Repair Cafés, whose aim is to give objects a second life;
• the dynamisation of activities and competitions to promote the soft modes of mobility.

In order to prove the commitment to sustainable development, it should be noted that FEUP:

• was the first Portuguese higher education institution to publish its sustainability report, in 2006;
• is a member of the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges since 2009;
• promoted and signed the commitment chart to sustainable development promoted by Rede Campus Sustentável - Portugal;
• is a founding member of the Portuguese Pact for Plastics and of the Glass+ Platform;
• is a member of the Porto Climate Pact;
• is a partner of the project ‘Engenheiras por um Dia’ (related to women in engineering), and is a signatory of the Alliance for Equality in ICTs;
• has started the EDS@FEUP project, promoted by the Faculty Board, which intends to create conditions for the development of sustainability competencies in the FEUP programmes.
