Description:	The Cultural Committee of FEUP was created in 2002 with the purpose of offering to the academy of Porto a regular cultural and artistic program that includes theatre, music, exhibitions, debates etc. Modern societies expect that universities not only train highly qualified professionals in different fields, but also promote in these young graduates and post-graduates an understanding of societal developments within a cultural perspective, which may include the active participation in artistically creative programs. Therefore, the annual program of the Cultural Committee offers professional performances given by external cultural institutions composed by professional artists (such as the orchestra from the association for Opera in the Academy and in the City, and the Porta-Jazz association), but has also a series of internal artistic projects that are organized by and performed by the members of the academic community. The most relevant of FEUP's performative projects are the Classic Orchestra , the Jazz Orchestra, the Vocal Group, the Theatre Project and the Painting Workshop, which are directed by reputed professionals of each area. They incorporate members from the whole University, with a majority of students, and have regular weekly activities (rehearsals, workshops, etc) throughout the whole academic year. Periodically, these projects present their performances and exhibitions. Both the Orchestras and the Vocal Group have already recorded 3 CDs, and the Theatre Project offered 11 plays to the public in FEUP. The number of regular active participants/performers in these activities is 150 and the annual public spectators is over 10 thousand people.
