Objectives
The main goal of this UC is that students become familiar with the state-of-the-art in a specific Engineering Physics subject, in its multiple branches, through seminars on the most varied relevant and current topics in the area.
Emerging topics, like advanced techniques and new trends in Engineering Physics, will be addressed in this class. It will allow the student to contact (in person or remotely) with professors and researchers in non-existent research areas in Portugal.
The student should also acquire competencies in bibliography research and its selection, as well as on proceeding on its analysis and identification of core scientific/technological points.
In this UC the student will also acquire oral and written scientific communication skills.
Learning outcomes and competences
The evaluation will focus on the competencies acquired by the students in oral and written communication of scientific themes in the area of Engineering Physics.
Through the interaction with the lecturers and researchers in the area of Engineering Physics, the students will have the opportunity to become familiar with the current trends in the research and practice of Engineering Physics, also on debating, analyzing, and understanding them.
Through the analysis and peer-on-peer discussion of scientific papers, and the preparation of oral and written contents, the students will acquire competencies in both oral and written scientific communication.

Program
Emerging topics in Physical Engineering in domains such as, among others, Nanosciences, Advanced Materials, Photonics and Optoelectronics, Energy Storage and Harvest Physics, Advanced Instrumentation and Biotechnology.
Mandatory literature
A definir ao longo do curso/dependente dos tópicos escolhidos.; To be defined thoughout the syllabus/dependent on the chosen topics.
Teaching methods and learning activities
In the first six weeks, six seminars on current “hot” topics in Engineering Physics will be lectured by national or internationally recognized researchers in each of these topics.
In the following six weeks, the students will be divided into groups. Each group will have to choose one of the six topics they had contact with in the previous weeks. The groups will then have to prepare a written work and an oral presentation about the scientific topic in question.
The students will be evaluated through written essay (70%) and oral presentation (30%)
