Students who successfully complete this course will:
1- be capable of explaining basic concepts and physical phenomena using appropriate vocabulary in Classical Mechanics
2- Solve simple equations of motion analytically, using the method of separation of variables.
3- Apply Newton’s laws, as well as conservation laws for linear and angular momentum, and energy.
4-Identify the forces and torques acting on a mechanical system and write down the equations of motion.
5- Use fundamental Classical Mechanics principles to determine pertinent physical quantities
6- Be capable of teamwork in solving problems and also be able to solve problems independently.
Estima-se que os estudantes dediquem ao estudo da unidade curricular de Física um período de tempo médio de 8 horas semanais.
Theoretical classes: Fundamental concepts and principles are introduced in these lectures, illustrated by the resolution of several application problems.
TP classes: Problem-solving by the students, under the supervision of the professor.
There will also be an optional experimental activity where damped oscillations will be studied using a smartphone's 3D accelerometer.

FM = min (0.4*Max (DA, E1) + 0.6*E2+AF, 20)

FM – Final mark
DA – Distributed Assessment: individual resolution of a test
E1 – First part of the exam (normal and “recurso”) where the same subject of the DA component is evaluated
E2 – Second part of the exam (normal and “recurso”) where the remaining subjects taught are evaluated
AF: Grade in the facultative assessment (maximum of 1 out of 20). This grade is only applied if the student gets approval without AF.
The mark of the DA component of the previous academic year may be considered if there is no DA in the current academic year. The mark of the DA component in the current academic year replaces that of the previous year.
Regardless of the DA mark obtained in the current year, all students can attend the two exams, normal and “recurso”.
