Objectives
This curricular unit aims to:
- Develop knowledge of content analysis, concept representation (indexing) and knowledge organisation systems;
- Provide students with the skills to build and use controlled vocabularies;
- Develop students' critical thinking in relation to the theory and practice of content analysis and indexing.
Learning outcomes and competences
By the end of the course, students should be able to analyse the content and index the most diverse types of documents and in the most varied contexts, applying indexing languages appropriately. They should also be able to build controlled vocabularies (lists of indexing terms and classifications).

Content analysis and indexing in the organisation and representation of information
Standard principles; conceptual models and their origins; content analysis.
Controlled vocabularies
- Combinatory or vocabulary languages
- Principles, structure and rules for their construction (international standards)
Structural classification models
- Enumerative and faceted classifications
- Basic principles, structure and construction method
New perspectives on subject indexing
Automatic indexing; collaborative tagging.

Teaching methods and learning activities
Expository lessons, supported by projections, to understand the basic theoretical concepts; class discussion of the theoretical basis of the subjects; practical exercises.

Students obtain attendance if they attend at least 75% of classes.
Calculation formula of final grade
Individual work (IW) presented in class.
Final exam (FE).
Each component accounts for 50% of the final grade:
