Justification:
This is the first course of the Integrated Master Programme dealing with the science and engineering of materials, and is centered on the acquisition of fundamental concepts of metallic materials and its properties, processing and applications.
Objectives:
This subject aims at attaining the following objectives:
1. To provide students with a broad knowledge of the properties and processing of metals and its alloys.
2. To demonstrate the dependence between processing conditions and properties of metallic materials.
3. To give students hands-on experience in a few experimental techniques used for materials.
4. To have contact with the research carried out in DEMM on materials. Visit industrial companies and research institutes.
With this course students will:
Acquire of a basic knowledge and training in metallic materials engineering;
Integrate understanding of the materials engineering to identify, formulate, and solve basic engineering problems;
Develop laboratory skills;
Be able to work in teams and use methods to communicate effectively.
1. Introduction to Materials Science and Engineering;
2. Mechanical properties and tests of metals;
3. Processing of metallic materials;
4. Metals and their engineering alloys.
Teaching will be composed of lecturing and case study classes, visits to industrial companies and research institutes, and laboratory classes with demonstrations of testing and processing of metallic materials.

Students with a minimum classification of 8 in 20 in the practical part of the course will obtain frequency. In the practical part of the course our school absence regulation will be applied.
Written examination - 60%
Practical evaluation - 40%
For approval the student must obtain a minimum of 8 in 20 on the practical part of the course.
The assessment of TE and DA is carried out through a written exam and a practical exam.
Special evaluation is judged by an oral examination fulfilled in the laboratory, allowing the simultaneous evaluation of the theoretical and practical knowledge of the student.
Classification improvement is carried out by taking the practical theoretical part exam.
