To provide essential tools for understanding the behavior of materials (structural and functional) and their interfaces with the environment.
Acquisiton of fundamental knowledge on Materials Science.
Capacity to integrate different knowledges.
Background knowledge in physics, Chemistry and Biology at the level of 12th year of education in Portugal.
TP classes:
1. Basic concepts on solids mechanics. Mechanical properties of materials
2. Phase equilibria involving the solid state. Non-equilibrium situations.
3. Atomic, Molecular and Crystalline structures and their relationships with materials properties. Relevance of structural (crystalline) defects, porosity, and anisotropy, among others. Imperfections.
4. Mechanical properties of metals.
5. Phase diagrams.
6. Ceramics - structure and properties. Sintering. Ceramic glasses and glasses. Characterization techniques.
7. Polymers - structure and properties. Thermoplastics, thermosets and elastomers.
8. Biomaterials; Hydrogels; Nanomaterials.
Lab sessions (PL):
Processing ceramic materials. Mechanical tests of ceramics and polymers. Metal processing and characterization.
Lectures by the professors followed by discussions with the students; implementation of experimental work.
