Objectives

The Thesis Project, chosen for the subsequent Thesis in a research topic, is in the form of a written document, including, among other elements: i) the state of the art, ii) the objectives, iii) the description of the problem(s), which is intended to solve, iv) the techniques, v) the methodologies and computational tools and tools to be used, vi) the plan od activities and, vii) the expected results and the expected indicators, including the ethical and social implications.

The student should demonstrate competences for bibliographic research, critical reasoning, creativity and innovation, a deep knowledge of the subject chosen, ability to delineate and program the work, ability to write a document that clearly and succinctly reflects the state of knowledge and ability to present and discuss it.

Learning outcomes and competences

The student, guided by the respective academic and company supervisors, will develop a work tending to integrate in the problematic that he will study, thus fulfilling the learning objectives. Although oriented, the work developed by the student must be quite autonomous, in preparation for the development of the Thesis itself.

Program

It is intended that the student presents a work in result of a detailed bibliographical research on the topic chosen for the Thesis. This work should include the state of the art related to the research work to be carried out, as well as the experimental path that it involves, including methodologies to adopt, support tools to use and social and ethical implications of the results obtained.

It is also intended that the final document clearly shows the objectives to be achieved, the gaps that the work will fill and the impact it will have on the corresponding area of study.

Mandatory literature

.; Dependente da tese de cada estudante/Dependent on the thesis of each student.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The student will develop, under tutorial guidance, a written report about the investigation he intends to follow, including the state of the art and the detailed thesis plan.

At the end, the student prepares a written report (in English), and presents and discusses the report/work in a session with the Thesis Monitoring Committee (CAT). The CAT is comprised of the supervision team and 2 external members with PhD, with expertise in the area of the research.

The CAT session evolves into 3 parts: part 1 - presentation of the work, lasting up to 30 minutes; part 2 - discussion with the 2 external elements, with a maximum duration of 60 minutes; part 3 - intervention of the remaining elements of CAT (supervision team), with a maximum duration of 15 minutes.

This session results in a written report from CAT with an opinion on the thesis plan and with the classifications of these units and for the curricular unit Introduction to Scientific Research.
