Objectives

The objective of this curricular unit is to provide to PhD student the indispensable tools to plan and carry out advanced scientific research, and to present, discuss and defend the results in a consistent and effective way. It is also intended to stimulate his/her capacity to innovate, undertake and question, as well as to systematize, interconnect and integrate knowledge, with a critical spirit and with an attitude of scientific, ethical and social responsibility in the exercise of research activity.

It is inside this curricular unit that the students acquire the necessary competences of integration in the teams of the academic supervision and companies that will support their PhD projects.

Learning outcomes and competences

The objective of this curricular unit is to provide PhD students with a wide range of skills, suitable for their doctoral work, so that the activities described in the syllabus, in particular the integration in the research units and in the companies where the work will take place seems to be the most appropriate form.

  1. Attending to presentations, workshops and short courses, given by professors, other PhD students and/or scientists and invited experts, on several key issues for the effective and responsible exercise of scientific research to be defined by the academic supervision teams.

  2. Insertion in the laboratories of the academic supervision teams, with the purpose of knowing the practices adopted and training in the main techniques/tools to be used in the PhD project.

  3. Participation in training actions and training at company environment that support the PhD project.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The teaching methods are diverse and are dependent on the PhD projects.

The evaluation takes place during the evaluation of the curricular units of Thesis Project, through the students' performance in the discussion of subjects related to techniques, methodologies and computer tools, and to integration in work / academic and company research environments.

The classification of this curricular unit is articulated with the curricular units of Thesis Project.
