Objectives

This curricular unit (UC) has as its main objective the acquisition of skills on the fundamental aspects of the connection between Engineering and Sustainability and respective challenges. To that end, this UC addresses fundamental concepts about sustainability in its environmental, economic, and social aspects.

Learning outcomes and competences

This Transversal Competence Unit is aimed at 1st cycle students of the various engineering courses. It aims to promote the learning of a set of knowledge in the area of sustainable development, namely, obtaining an overview of:

  • The fundamentals of Sustainable Development;

  • The regulatory and strategic framework for Sustainable Development, namely the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, and the Action Plan for Financing Development.

  • The business approach to sustainable development and environmental, social, and corporate governance standards.

  • The challenges of climate and energy transition: scenarios and impacts; regulatory framework; carbon neutrality trajectories and cost-benefit evaluation of decarbonisation; strategies to promote renewable energies, energy efficiency, and sustainable mobility.

  • Challenges, strategies, regulation, technologies, and economic assessment in the management of water resources, protection of biodiversity, and enhancement of natural capital.

  • Sustainable development financing mechanisms, the relevance of development cooperation, and innovative sustainable financing instruments.
