Objectives

Introduction to Design Methodologies. The importance of design in the Life Cycle of mechanical systems. The different Project phases and their importance. Design of mechanical systems, involving the calculation of mechanical transmissions, speed reducers, and gearboxes, with the calculation of the kinematic chain, structural calculation of transmission shafts, and selection of other mechanical elements such as bearings, seals, etc., as well as actuator subsystems (electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic) and control.
Other small projects involving the selection and calculation of mechanical elements.

Learning outcomes and competences

The discipline of Introduction the Design of Machines is intended to start the activity of students as project engineers. It is intended primarily to make an introduction to design methodologies, with the development of a small project that involves the development of practical design, with the simulation of real design practices, which is achieved through the guidance of work by invited lecturers with extensive professional experience and among the most respected in the industry.
In this way, students acquire skills in the area of personal and professional skills, identification and formulation of problems, finding solutions thereof, experimentation and knowledge discovery, thinking about systems, improvement of personal skills and attitudes towards new problems and ethical analysis in solving them, improving inter personal skills and communication with the presentation of a final report,
with the study, design and implementation of the systems developed in simulated industrial environment.

Eligibility for exams

Students will be subjected to continuous assessment (AC) and realization of a project embodied in a technical design, supported by a report, to be discussed at the end of the semester (RDF).

Students should have a positive assessment in the assessment of AC, in order to present the RDF. The component  RDF will also be classified with a grade greater than or equal to 10 to pass the student at UC.

The results of the evaluation AC should be communicated to students until December 8, 2023 and RDF (if admitted to the second stage) to be presented to the course diretor till December 15, 2023.

Calculation formula of final grade

If AC > 10 and RDF > 10, the final score is based on:

 AC / 2 + RDF / 2

At the end of the semester, the evaluation jury will assign the final score.

It is considered for all assessments range 0 to 20.
