Objectives
The overall objective of this course is to train and raise the awareness of students to integrate and quantify natural radiation in environmental and occupational assessments.
Due to the emerging nature of the subject and its holistic approach, this training can be attended by any student regardless of the areas of technology, exact sciences and engineering.
Learning outcomes and competences
By the end of this CT, students should be able to:
- Identify the sources of natural radiation,
- Quantify the radiation in materials of geological origin,
- Establish and characterize the exposure pathways,
- Assess the effects on health and the environment, by calculating doses,
- Framing and interpreting the results obtained in the framework of the applicable legislation,
- Present and communicate in an appropriate way the results of radiation quantification.

- Introduction to radioactivity and natural radiation,
- Basic concepts about ionizing radiation,
- Physical description - radioactive decay, half-life, decay constant,
- Detection and equipment and measurement,
- Natural radioactive background and radioactivity of materials of geological origin,
- Exposure sources and forms of exposure,
- Current and relevant legislation and standards,
- Evaluation of health and environmental effects: dose calculation and biological effects,
- Protection and control measures,
- Forms of presentation and communication of results.

Teaching methods and learning activities
According to the program, classes are of a theoretical-practical nature, consisting of lectures to expose the issues to be addressed, with illustration of concepts, accompanied by examples and presentation of case studies. Students will have the opportunity to apply and test the knowledge acquired by carrying out biweekly assignments in an out-of-class environment.

Eligibility for exams
Attendance at least 75% of classes (with mandatory participation in evaluation moments).
Calculation formula of final grade
Two components will be considered:
- T: biweekly work to be done out of the class environment with oral presentation (40%).
- TF: final work with public presentation and report (60%).
Formula for calculating the final grade (NF):
NF = 40% T + 60% TF
According to the GR 02/11/2020, Cap II, art 13, point 1, the final classification will be expressed on an integer numerical scale from 0 to 20 values.
Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)
In these cases, the evaluation will be carried out in a special appeal season via examination in which it will have a weighting of 100%.
