Objectives
The main objective is to face each student with a professional contact in the area of Materials Engineering. It is expected that the student will develop, with high autonomy, an experimental work, under the supervision of a teacher of LiEMAT, although there might also exist a supervisor from the other participating institution.
The work may consist of:
1) internship in a business environment or in an R&D unit;
2) participation in an R&D project;
3) solving a problem of a company (a group with 2-3 students may be constituted for this);
4) participation in a multidisciplinary project relevant to the area of Materials Engineering.
Learning outcomes and competences
This curricular unit should give the students practical skills, workplace experience and greater knowledge of the industry and research activity. It can still equip the student with a range of transferable skills and help him network and build valuable connections in the industry or the academy.
Working method
Presencial
Program
This course unit does not have a specific syllabus. Each student will develop a work that allows him to have direct contact with professional reality in the area of Materials Engineering.
All the assignments should be carried out within the period of classes (13 weeks), so that the result can be presented during the assessment period at the end of the second semester.
Mandatory literature
_; _
Comments from the literature
Each student will have a specific bibliography for the subject to be addressed.
Teaching methods and learning activities
It is expected that the student finds a company or R&D unit that satisfies the requirements for internship and submit the proposal to the Head of UC for validation before the beginning of the 2nd semester. The Head of UC will also present to students, in a specila session before the start of the 2nd semester, a list of institutions potentially interested in receiving students (and the contacts), as well as a list of works of typology 2), 3) or 4).
The project will be developed throughout the semester, on a basis of a regular contact (8 hours x 13 weeks =104 hours), remaining 58 hours (4,4 hours x13 weaks) for autonomous study, including research and reporting.
The student will be guided by a supervisor from the participate institution and by a professor from L.EMAT/DEMM.

Eligibility for exams
Attendance compliance. Absences should not exceed 25% of the scheduled face-to-face time and must be justified.
Calculation formula of final grade
The evaluation has two components, with equal weight:
- evaluation of a poster prepared according to the defined rules and presented to a jury in a specific session, based on the following elements:
- Technical and scientific content;
- Quality of writing, graphic design and formatting of the document;
- Clarity and accuracy of the presentation.
- evaluation of the demonstrated performance and quality of the work done, based on the opinion of the supervisor of the company or R&D institution and the FEUP supervisor.
Examinations or Special Assignments
Not applicable.
Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)
Students with a special status are assessed as regular students.
Classification improvement
There is no improvement of the grade.
