Objectives

OBJECTIVES: To understand the basics of the statistical methods and how to apply it in civil engineering data.

Learning outcomes and competences

SKILLS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES: Describe the various problems of civil engineering, plan the experiments and analyze the results. As well as, identify and apply the statistical techniques / tools to model and characterize several situations.
Characterization and configuration of a traffic system,  variable definitions, choice of scenarios and interpretation of results.

Working method

Presencial

Program

Design and carry out statistical studies in the field of civil engineering. Planning, statistical analysis and stochastic modeling of civil engineering problems.
Queueing theory systems with and without server vacations. Modeling and simulation of traffic systems.

DEMONSTRATION OF THE SYLLABUS COHERENCE WITH THE CURRICULAR UNIT'S OBJECTIVES:

The application of statistical tools allows the achievement of the objectives, in particular as regards knowledge of theoretical foundations and applicability to problems of civil engineering.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The teaching involves sessions with theoretical presentations and discussions. The student grading will be based on a report assignment.

DEMONSTRATION OF THE COHERENCE BETWEEN THE TEACHING METHODOLOGIES AND THE LEARNING OUTCOMES:

The report assignment and the discussion of the UC contents allows for an efficient learning experience at this education level

Assessment Components

Designation Weight (%)
Participação presencial 10,00
Trabalho escrito 90,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

Designation Time (hours)
Estudo autónomo 20,00
Frequência das aulas 36,00
Trabalho escrito 20,00
Total: 76,00

Eligibility for exams

The conditions for obtaining frequency are expressed in Normas Gerais de Avaliação da FEUP (nonattendances not to exceed the limit number corresponding to 25% of the planned lectures).

Calculation formula of final grade

The final grade (FG) are determined as follows: FG= Working Report (ratings of all the components of assessment are expressed in the range 0 to 20).

Examinations or Special Assignments

Accomplishment and presentation of a work.
