To understand the basis of the laboratory techniques and physical modeling and to learn how to apply them to the several coastal engineering test types (breakwaters stability, sediment transport, etc).
To plan and define the physical modeling test plan for coastal engineering real cases, the choice of materials to use, the model construction, the interpretation of results and scale effects evaluation.
Dimensional analysis of hydraulic similitude. Reproduction and control of maritime agitation in laboratory: 1st order and non-linear unidirectional generation; irregular agitation; three-dimensional agitation. Measurement and analysis: types of measurements, instrumentation, tools and techniques; active and passive absorption; agitation data; reflection control; Scales, models distortion, scale effects. Hydrodynamic models and stability. Hydromorphological models. Laboratory applications.
DEMONSTRATION OF THE SYLLABUS COHERENCE WITH THE CURRICULAR UNIT'S OBJECTIVES:
The use of physical modeling and the perception of the phenomena in coastal engineering enable the achievement of the objectives, namely allowing understanding the fundamentals of this important design tool and its application to civil engineering problems.
The teaching involves sessions with theoretical/practical presentations, tutorial and discussions. The student grading will be based on one or more report assignments and a written exam if necessary.
DEMONSTRATION OF THE COHERENCE BETWEEN THE TEACHING METHODOLOGIES AND THE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
The report assignments and the discussion of the UC contents allows for an efficient learning experience at this education level, complemented if necessary by an exam in order to verify the knowledge acquired.
