Objectives

The student will master the fundamental concepts of numerical methods and will have the ability to perform numerical modeling of technological processes such as bulk metal forming and sheet metal forming, by using commercial codes and related pre and post processing tools.

Learning outcomes and competences

By the end of the semester, students should:

1. be acquainted with the methods used in numerical modeling programs;

2. be able to use pre-processing, analysis and post-processing tools, which are necessary to the numerical simulation as well as being able to develop specific programming tools to efficiently obtain the numerical model and specific results;

3. be able to create the numerical model of applications to technological processes, performing the analysis and getting results in parallel with a critical evaluation. Also, student should be able to suggest directions for improvements in order to avoid defects by selecting or changing processing variables and optimizing the process.

Technological Processes; different types using different tools and machines applied to different materials; numerical models to model different type of processes.

Finite Element Method; application to solving problems by using commercial software; definition of pre-processing and model creation tasks, analysis (processing) and improvement of numerical model, post-processing and analysis of results.

Constitutive models of material characterization to be used in numerical simulation; metallic materials, properties and corresponding behavior; identification of parameters for constitutive equations.

Metal forming and corresponding fundamental concepts; numerical modeling of forming processes, analysis and evaluation of results in order to optimize the process parameters or material characteristics.

The use of numerical simulation to perform optimization of the process.

Theoretical classes: presentation of numerical methods and the fundamental knowledge of technological processes

Applied classes: presentation of simulation methodologies and corresponding tools. Development of given practical problems to be solved and obtain solutions by numerical modeling. Critical evaluation of results and full participation on this topic.
