Objectives
The main objective of this course is to provide to the students scientific, technical and practical knowledge to analyse data related to transports, using modelling, to support the decision making and to solve problems regarding transports. This objective can be divided in several learning objectives:
- Identify and define a problem, and the best methodological approach taking into account the available data to the study;
- Identify concepts and technics to collect, to process, to describe and to show the quantitative information;
- Apply mathematical tools for data analysis and modelling as well as software;
- Acquire critical understanding of different approaches and identify the best method to be develop and/or use;
- Identify and apply methods and practices for support the decision making process and implementation of transport measures.
Learning outcomes and competences
The student acquires knowledge of fundamental concepts in transportation as well as concepts of statistical analysis to support the development of transport studies based on data analysis.
Based on that, the student acquires skills to explore different approaches of data treatment and analysis to respond to the identified transport issue.
By applying mathematical tools (modelling, simulation and optimization), using software, to study cases the student will be able to quantify the problem and to identify the solution. Taking into account the acquired experience, the student will be able to have a critical understanding of different approaches, which will be the support for her/his professional work in particularly to identify the best practices to suppoort the decison making process.

Teaching methods and learning activities
Theoretical classes will be based on the oral presentation of themes of the course supported by slides including debate of the subjects and study cases. Theoretical-practical classes will be based on the development of team work regarding different case studies, using informatics resources, in which the students will apply the concepts that have been taught.

Eligibility for exams
Achieving final classification requires compliance with attendance at the course unit, according to the M.EC assessment rules. It is considered that students meet the attendance requirements if, having been regularly enrolled, the number of absences of 25% for each of the classes’ types is not exceeded.
Calculation formula of final grade
The final grade of the course comprehends an exam to knowledge assessment (50%), complemented by the classification of the practical work either the report and presentation (50%). Two exam periods are offered and the work classification is included in both occasions.
Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)
The practical work classification is based on a single work which includes a report and a presentation.
