Teaching language

Suitable for English-speaking students

Objectives

Provide students with skills to analyze, specify and design information services and systems, from a socio-technical perspective, and based on design, systemic, creative and critical thinking.

Learning outcomes and competences

By being approved for the curricular unit, students will be able to:

- Explain what the design of services and systems based on design thinking consists of
- Explain and apply the main techniques and tools of design thinking
- Explain the role of systemic, creative and critical thoughts in the design of information systems and services
- Explain and apply the main techniques of information services design
- Explain and apply the main techniques of information systems design

Mandatory literature

Klaus Pohl; Requirements Engineering: Fundamentals, Principles, , Springer, 2010. ISBN: 978-3-642-12577-5

Teaching methods and learning activities

Project-oriented teaching using the problem-based teaching method. Students are divided into groups and carry out a project covering all the phases of a requirements engineering process involving design thinking and the analysis, specification and design of services and information systems.

Expository method used in class to present the conceptual, theoretical and methodological basis for carrying out the project.

Due to the project-based nature of the course, assessment is carried out continuously through theoretical/practical work/projects, namely:

  • 2 Individual assignments: Analysis and discussion of two articles at two different times, through the submission of work on the Moodle Platform;

  • Group project: Consolidation and application of the techniques, methods and methodologies presented in a specific problem for the development of an information service and system, identified by the group. Assessment is carried out through two face-to-face oral presentations of the project and the submission of a final project report with the requirements specification, via the Moodle Platform.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Assessment Components

Designation Weight (%)
Trabalho escrito 30,00
Trabalho prático ou de projeto 70,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

Designation Time (hours)
Elaboração de projeto 60,00
Estudo autónomo 26,00
Frequência das aulas 36,00
Trabalho escrito 40,00
Total: 162,00

Eligibility for exams

Mandatory attendance at 75% of practical classes.

Mandatory attendance at all scheduled oral presentations of the group project.

A minimum mark of 40% is required in any of the assessment components.

Calculation formula of final grade

FG = 0.7*PFG + 0.3*IWG

FG - Final Grade
PFG - Group Project Final individual Grade
IWG - Individual Work Grade

Teachers reserve the right to differentiate the grading of students from the same group, depending on the factual perception of the effort made by each element and participation and discussion in the oral presentations.

Examinations or Special Assignments

Not applicable.

Internship work/project

Not applicable.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Students who attend under regimes other than the ordinary one carry out the assessment components when it takes place for other students.

Classification improvement

It is possible to improve the grade for the Individual Work component during the appeal period.

The grade for the Project assessment component cannot be improved during the appeal period, and can only be improved during the next course.
