Objectives
The intention of this course that the students acquire knowledge on: a) the concepts, services and multimedia applications and hypermedia, b) coding techniques and representation of multimedia information, c) networks and protocols relevant to multimedia d) the requirements of quality of service of various mediaquality of service requirements and how they can be met.
Learning outcomes and competences
As a result of this course it is intended that students acquire theoretical knowledge about the media in general, standardized coding of image, video and audio, as well as on transmission of multimedia content via communications networks.

Introduction to multimedia - definition, types of media, basic technologies, multimedia applications and their requirements. Brief introduction to computer networks. OSI and TCP reference models. TCP/IP protocol stack. Image and video information - working principles of the human visual system; perceptual and physical characteristics of visual signals; color systems, conversion between color systems, spatial and temporal resolution. Visual signal compression techniques and international standards (JPEG and MPEG video standards family). Sound information - working principles of the human auditory system; perceptual and physical characteristics of sound signals. Sound signal compression techniques and MPEG Audio standards. Multimedia application network requirements - performance parameters, various media requirements. IPTV.
