Objectives
In curricular unit Dissertation, it is intended for the student to carry out an individual research and development work leading to the elaboration of a scientific dissertation on a topic in the area of knowledge of the master's degree programme, aiming at the integration and application of skills and attitudes acquired throughout the programme to solve complex problems involving knowledge in engineering.
Learning outcomes and competences
Development of the capacities of initiative, decision-making, innovation, creative and critical thinking in solving complex engineering problems. Competences to perform individual work of research and development.
Working method

Program
The dissertation work can be a research and/or technological development and application, involving experimental means and/or simulation, that promotes the development of the student's initiative, decision-making, innovation, and of creative and critical thinking. It should involve the analysis of new situations, gathering relevant information, development and selection or design of methodological approaches and tools for the resolution of the problem, its resolution, the exercise of synthesis and preparation of the findings, and the preparation of a relevant dissertation subject to public presentation and discussion of results.
The deadline for the submission of the draft version of the dissertation will be set by resolution of the master's programme Scientific Committee. The public presentation and defense of the dissertation will take place at the end of the academic semester in the period reserved for evaluations. After the public presentation and defense, and for official archival purposes (FEUP Library + National Observatory of Science and Higher Education Library), it is necessary to hand in to the Academic Services the final version of the dissertation's document already with any modifications required by the jury during the public defense, duly validated by the president of the jury.
During the course of work the applicant must provide any intermediate results and information necessary for evaluating the progress of work, for consultation by the supervisor and the defense committee.

Teaching methods and learning activities
The Dissertation work may be performed in an academic environment or an academic and business one. In the second case the objectives, the nature and form of monitoring of work should be agreed in advance between the student, the faculty and the host company's supervisors (the model contract will be provided by the secretariat of the master programme). This contract will be validated by the Master's Director, and ensures that the scientific and pedagogical objectives are achieved, whilst protecting any confidentiality issues by the host company / institution.

Eligibility for exams
The student must fully complete the proposed dissertation work plan and submit the dissertation document for evaluation.
Calculation formula of final grade
According to "Master's Dissertations, Rules for its functioning" at FEUP, the final classification will be attributed by a jury appointed by the Scientific Committee of the Masters' programme and which will include at least one of the supervisors.
The evaluation components will have the following weights:
- Technical-scientific quality of the work developed: 50%;
- Quality of the dissertation document: 35%;
- Quality of presentation and public discussion: 15%.
These components must be evaluated quantitatively by each member of the jury in a
integer scale from 0 to 20. The final grade of the dissertation is expressed in the integer scale
from 0 to 20 and results from the simple arithmetic mean, rounded to the unit, of the ratings
awarded individually by each member of the jury.
