Objectives

To develop and apply scientific research methodologies by carrying out an individual research project. Students will be integrated in a research team and will develop their own project under the supervision of senior researchers.

Learning outcomes and competences

Students that obtain positive rating should be able to:
-Develop strategies to address scientific questions
-Perform a literature search addressing the state of the art of their project
-Analyze the experimental results that were obtained
-Discuss the results obtained and propose alternative solutions to the problem
-Develop compentences in the presentation of the results both orally as well as in the form of a written report
-Acquire knowledge in different areas of Bioengineeering
-Integrate a research team

Working method

Presencial

Program

Students are assigned an R&D project on subjects related to Bioengineering, particulalrly to Biological Engineering.
Research projects can be experimental, theoretical or computational.
A different project will be assigned to each student, except under specific situations.

Mandatory literature

B. Gastel, R. A. Day.; How to write & publish a scientific paper. ISBN: ISBN-10: 1440842809

Teaching methods and learning activities

Presentation of the research projects propsed by research groups, followed by selection of the students’ topics of choice. Each project has a supervisor (and, if necessary, a co-supervisor). Students submit a final report and make a presentation and defence before the curricular unit’s coordinator.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Assessment Components

Designation Weight (%)
Participação presencial 30,00
Defesa pública de dissertação, de relatório de projeto ou estágio, ou de tese 40,00
Trabalho escrito 30,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

Designation Time (hours)
Estudo autónomo 50,00
Trabalho de investigação 239,00
Trabalho escrito 35,00
Total: 324,00

Eligibility for exams

Attendance is obtained through the completion of the work throughout the semester and the oral presentation of the project results and delivery of the final report.

Calculation formula of final grade

Attendance frequency is obtained through the development of a project throughout the semester and the submission of a final report. Attendance frequency is assessed by the supervisor(s).
Formula Evaluation: Final mark takes into consideration 3 parameters:
(1) Work Monitoring: Quality, Commitment and Autonomy. These items are assessed by the supervisor(s) (30%);
(2) Report: Organisation, Scientific Content, assessed by the supervisor and the curricular unit’s coordinator (30%);
(3) Presentation/ Oral discussion: Clarity, Relevance, Defence arguments (40%).
