Objectives

This course aims at developing management competencies, integrating a solid theoretical basis with case study analysis and discussion.

Learning outcomes and competences

Upon completing this curricular unit, the students shuold be able to:


  1. Understand the econonomic and social context in which companies operate

  2. Understand the role of the manager and management, as well as its evolution.

  3. Understand the purposes of management: organize, coordinate, plan and control efficiently the scarce resources used to produce products or services

  4. Understand the different functional areas of financial management, marketing and operations, and how they can be integrated in the firm's strategy.

  5. Apply a set of concepts, methods and tools of financial management, marketing, operations and strategy to analyze problems, identify alternatives and make decisions.

  6. Be able to apply management methods and tools to analyze company's management and identify improvements.

  7. Understand the components of a business model and how they work together to create, deliver, and capture value.

  8. Improve teamwork and comunication skills.

The syllabus will start from the general (socio-economic and environmental context) and drill down to the particular (business management).

Teaching methods and learning activities

Lectures will focus on the fundamental management concepts and tools, which provide the basis for the applied work. Practical work will focus on case study analysis and discussion, with two types: a) Class case study discussion in class of cases made available the previous week, with no evaluation; b) 2 case study analysis, report and discussion in class, which will count for the frequency evaluation.

Eligibility for exams

Students are required to complete a group assignment :
Analysis and discussion of 2 cases studies

  • 40% of final grade
  • 10% individual participation in case study discussion 


The individual frequency evaluation may vary between -2 and +2, according to the results of the inter group evaluation

Minimum classification of  7,5 out of 20 in each of the evaluation components.

Type of evaluation: Distributed evaluation with final exam

Calculation formula of final grade

Final grade = 0,5* (analysis and discussion of 2 case studies)+ 0,1*(individual participation in case study discussion) +0,4* exam.

Students who fail to participate in case discussion will have zero in their discussion evaluation, which represents 25% of the case study evaluation.

The classification of the individual continuous assessment of each element of the working group may vary between -2 and +2 values according to the results of the inner work group assessment.

Minimum classification of  7,5 out of 20 in each of the evaluation components.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Evaluation similar to ordinary students.
The presence during assignment presentations and participation in discussion is mandatory for all students.They are, however, excused from classes.

Classification improvement

The classification improvement of the exam follows FEUP'S regulations.
The classification improvement of the distributed component can be done at the same time as the practical assignments in the following academic year.
