Objectives
The students should be able to:
- Demonstrate basic knowledge about electricity systems of LV and MV
- Perform short-circuit calculations following the Thévenin model
- Describe the characteristics and operating principles of switching apparatus and protection devices for LV and MV use
- Interpret and reproduce electrical diagrams of basic LV installations and secondary stations
- Know and apply safety rules for persons’ protection
- Design basic electric installations
- Analyze the economic and technical aspects associated to LV generation
Learning outcomes and competences
•To give the students a general survey on the electrical sector in Portugal.
•To present some equipment used in medium voltage facilities and, mainly, in low voltage installations considering the technological and functional characteristics.
•To present the students the method of dimensioning electrical cables and their protections.
•To inform the students about the requirements of electrical projects concerning residential buildings.
Working method
Presencial
Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)
The frequency of this unit requires knowledge taught in UCs Circuitos and Sistemas Elétricos de Energia. It is the student's responsibility to ensure mastery of the topics addressed these UCs

Teaching methods and learning activities
•Theoretical classes: Use of transparencies / electronic documents. The exhibition is illustrated with the visualization of the equipments, whenever such it is possible.
•Practical classes: Resolution of problems belonging to a list previously distributed the students, design of electric diagrams, mount of small circuits.
Visits to a medium voltage switchgear installation and to a factory of electrical cables manufacturing.

Eligibility for exams
There are two evaluation components: a) Mini-test or individual work to be carried out in laboratory classes; b) Final exam.
The students must not exceed the absence limit established to the practical classes. These are the skills which are assessed: CDIO Syllabus- a) 1.2, 2.1; b) 1.2, 2.3; c) 1.2, 2.1, 2.3.
Calculation formula of final grade
CLASS_FINAL(NF) = 0,75 x CLASS_EXAM + 0,25 x CLASS_TEST.
Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)
Identical to the evaluation procedure established to the ordinary students.
Classification improvement
•CLASS_FINAL(NF) = 0,75 x CLASS_EXAM + 0,25 x CLASS_Test.
•Note: You can only improve the Test classification.
Observations
Note 1: Transparencies / electronic documents used on theorethical classes, are provided to students, covering most of the subjects. However, we recommend the consultation of the catalogs of manufacturers of electrical equipment. Note 2: There will be one study tour inside the campus of FEUP. These visit will take place during the practical sessions.
